Chapter 4

“The final test,” Astronaut James said, “is the KC-135. This is a zero-gravity spaceflight also known as The Vomit Comet. Future astronauts travel in this special airplane that dips and climbs through the air to simulate the feeling of weightlessness or floating in twenty to twenty-five second intervals.”

“Why is it known as the Vomit Comet?” Norman asked.

“It’s called the Vomit Comet because it makes most future astronauts feel sick.”

All the kids giggled and pretended to barf on each other.

“This is very serious,” Astronaut James said. “If you can’t pass this test we can’t send you into space. Nobody likes vomit on Earth. Nobody likes vomit in space, either.”

Galaxy barked. He agreed.

“If you pass this test all the other physical skills can be practiced,” Astronaut James said.

Terrified, I rolled Rocket onto the plane. What if I fail this test too? I will never be able to go into space, I thought.
